When you decide to make a new knife, the first thought that'll pop into your head will most likely be "What is it going to look like?". In reality, it should be "What is it's purpose going to be?". Once you have that all figured out, you can feel free to draw up some sketches and get your steel out.
Another thing I should mention, is when it comes to planning, sharpies are going to be one of your main tools, so have plenty of sharpies lying around. Personally, when it comes to planning a knife, I like to be very minimal about it. I draw a rough sketch on a piece of paper after figuring out what it'll do, and then draw a rougher sketch onto my steel. I don't spend as much time as I should in planning out my knives, but I prefer to draw with a hammer and a grinder than with a sharpie.
If you decide to go down the route that I do in terms of not planning almost at all, make sure you think about what you're doing before you do it. All you need is to drill one hole out of haste to fuck up an entire knife. As my grandpa always says, measure twice, cut once.
